Last week I had the opportunity to get back out into the Columbia River Gorge. I visited Rowena, Oregon to hike the Tom McCall Preserve at Rowena Crest.
The trailhead was clearly designated with a marker labeled “Rowena Crest”. Even at the trailhead, you could see a beautiful view of the Columbia River.. Parking was free and was a loop in front of the trailhead, with additional parking along the entrance if needed.

We began the trail by walking through a field of wildflowers. For those interested in getting great photos in the wildflowers, you don’t have to walk far. After that is when the incline began. This trail was a bit challenging due to the almost constant climb to the summit. There were very few places where the trail flattened out.
The Preserve is open to the public from March 1st to October 31st. When I visited (mid-May) the wildflowers had already reached peak bloom. The main wildflowers that I observed throughout my hike were Yellow Balsam and Lupine. We did see some Paintbrush as well, but they were a lot less prominent.

This trail offers great views of Mt. Adams, Washington and Mt. Hood, Oregon that only get better as you climb. Mt. Adams is predominantly viewable throughout the trail, while Mt. Hood peaks through as you round the mountain to the summit.

Things to note:
- From the Rowena Crest Trailhead to the summit I logged about 1.9 miles on my watch.
- Hiking boots and poles will help navigate the rocky terrain.
- The majority of the trail offers little to no tree coverage, so be prepared for the sun exposure.
- This is a popular trail, and the trail is very narrow. There will be times when you will have to wait to let other hikers pass in order to proceed.
- Dogs are not allowed on this trail.
- I would definitely suggest packing some snacks so you can sit and enjoy the views at the top, and make sure to bring plenty of water!
