Review:
Punchbowl Falls is about 30 minutes outside of Portland in the Columbia River Gorge. There are multiple parking lots to access this trail each with restrooms (which are seasonal). In order to hike, you will need a recreation pass, which can be purchased in advance or at the trailheads. We parked across from the salmon hatchery and walked over to the main trailhead.

Once on the trail we began our accent, which took us over multiple types of terrain. It had recently rained, so the water level was high, and there were multiple small waterfalls along the trail that we had to walk under/behind. You’ll want to make sure to wear shoes with good traction, as you’ll be navigating over slippery rocks at times. There are also parts of the trail that have chain railing to help you navigate.
You’ll soon meet a sign directing you down to the Lower Punchbowl. You’ll have to deviate from the main trail, but it is worth the trip. The trail will lead you right to the water’s edge – and some people even choose to get in the punchbowl when the water is calm (make sure to use caution if you do decide to enjoy the water).

As you continue to climb, you’ll quickly reach the Upper Punchbowl, which isn’t accessible to hikers. It provides an amazing aerial view of the Upper Punchbowl. The trail does keep going, and eventually leads you to Tunnel Falls. If you just came for the punchbowls, you can turn around at the upper to return to the trailhead.

Overall, this is a great hike. Like multiple trails in the Gorge, it does get crowded pretty quickly. I would suggest getting their early, packing plenty of water/snacks, and making sure to wear proper apparel and footwear. As always, make sure to leave no trace. This area is part of the gorge that is recovering from recent wildfires, and the ecosystem is delicate.
